Frédéric Louf
Born 1962 in Picardie, region of Northern France. After studying business and law, in 1986 he became a movie critic for the French daily newspaper “Le Matin de Paris”. In 1992 he started writing for television. In 2000 he directed his first short film, JUST LITTLE BIRDS (LES PETIT OISEAUX), which was screened at the Cannes Film Festival 2001 in the official selection. In 2003 he wrote and directed several episodes of GIFT, a 3D animated TV series. 18 YEARS OLD AND RISING (J’AIME REGARDER LES FILLES) his is first feature film.

Nato nel 1962 in Piccardia, regione della Francia settentrionale. Dopo aver studiato economia e legge, nel 1986 diventa critico cinematografico del quotidiano francese “Le Matin de Paris”. Nel 1992 inizia a scrivere per la televisione. Nel 2000 dirige il suo primo cortometraggio, JUST LITTLE BIRDS (LES PETIT OISEAUX), presentato in concorso al Festival di Cannes del 2001 nella selezione ufficiale. Nel 2003 ha scritto e diretto diversi episodi di una serie tv realizzata in animazione 3D e intitolata GIFT. 18 YEARS OLD AND RISING (J’AIME REGARDER LES FILLES) è il suo primo lungometraggio.

Director’s statement

I’m more a romantic than an activist. Above all, I’ve made a love story. And a film about adolescence. And more specifically: about immaturity and its drawbacks… In fact, I’m campaigning for immaturity! 

Primo is a young man who is looking for his place in society. As often during adolescence, one feels out of place everywhere, and especially in one’s own family. This is why at first he doesn’t attempt to have some objective distance in reference to Gabrielle and her milieu: for him it has to be better just because it’s something different! And he isn’t in fact in a hurry to be defined by one milieu or by another. He only wants one thing: to follow his own desire. And that is where his immaturity catches up with him, because what defines immaturity is precisely not understanding your own desires! 

The song J’AIME REGARDER LES FILLES was the summer hit that year (1981 by Patric Coutin, who sang and wrote the song) and it’s still a hit today… of course I know that it seems like I’m thumbing my nose at my main character, who is anything but a flirt. He’s a romantic; he falls in love with every girl he meets. But I always thought that J’AIME REGARDER LES FILLES was in fact a song about a guy who is waiting to find his true love – the one and only - with an immense fervor, it's almost painful. Also, I think the song has a second hidden meaning, below the surface and I like that. 

I needed an important election to serve as a catalyst for Primo’s sudden awareness; an election characterized by a veritable fervor from the majority of French citizens, clearly splitting society and leading to a real change. 

Over these past thirty years, two things stood out to me in particular: the first is that a large section of the population – notably the working class – has disappeared from the landscape, to the extent that they no longer exist in the minds of French citizens. In 1980, blue collar workers were on the front page of newspapers because they were activists, and their space in the media was proportional to the space they occupied in society. The second is that at the time period it was clearly much easier than it is today as a student to find odd jobs to help make ends meet. 

Dichiarazioni del regista

Sono un romantico più che un attivista. Anzitutto, ho diretto una storia d’amore. Un film sull’adolescenza. E, più precisamente, un film sull’età acerba e sui suoi problemi. Si tratta, infatti, di una specie di campagna a favore dell’immaturità. 

Primo è un giovane uomo che cerca il suo posto nella società. Nell’adolescenza capita spesso di sentirsi fuori luogo ovunque, specialmente nella propria famiglia. Per questo motivo, inizialmente Primo non cerca di tenersi a distanza da Gabrielle e dal suo ambiente, che egli pensa sia migliore solo perché è diverso dal suo. Infatti non ha fretta di collocarsi in questo o quell’altro ambiente. Vuole solo una cosa: assecondare il proprio desiderio. E qui paga lo scotto della sua immaturità, perché ciò che caratterizza l’immaturità è proprio l’incapacità di capire i propri desideri. 

La canzone J’AIME REGARDER LES FILLES (cantata e scritta da Patric Coutin) fu il tormentone dell’estate del 1981, ed è ancora oggi un brano di successo. Lo so, sembra che io stia prendendo in giro il mio protagonista, che è tutto tranne che un cascamorto. In realtà Primo è un romantico, si innamora di tutte le ragazze che incontra. Ma ho sempre pensato che J’AIME REGARDER LES FILLES fosse una canzone su un ragazzo che cerca con trasporto il vero amore – il solo e l’unico – con un fervore immenso, in modo struggente, quasi doloroso. Credo inoltre che la canzone abbia un secondo significato nascosto dietro la superficie, e questo mi piace.
