Sara Blecher
Graduate of New York University. She produced and directed some documentaries including SURFING SOWETO (2011), and KOBUS AND DUMILE (2003), for which she won CNN’s African journalist of the year award in the Arts and Culture category. She produced and directed the TV series BAY OF PLENTY and the South African version of the BBC series WHO DO YOU THINK YOU ARE?. She co-founded Cinga Productions which produced TV series such as the Emmy-nominated ZERO TOLERANCE: she co-wrote, produced and directed episodes of this production. OTELO BURNING is her first fiction feature.

Director’s statement
Somewhere between CITY OF GOD and BLUE CRUSH, OTELO BURNING is an emotional coming-of-age story about kids learning to surf. Set against the backdrop of Nelson Mandela’s release from prison, it looks at the enormous potential for change at the time of Apartheid's downfall – all seen through the eyes of a child. The idea behind OTELO BURNING germinated and grew in the small township of Lamontville on the east coast of South Africa. It is a visually dynamic and emotionally powerful drama about two friends who discover surfing as the only way out of their township and the misery of their lives. They are on the cusp of making it in this world when they turn on each other. After this the story becomes one of greed, betrayal and jealousy; a metaphor for a nation grappling with its own freedom.
For many years, South African filmmakers have felt the need to shape their films to appeal to foreign audiences. This diluted the integrity and power of their stories and diminished what is unique and compelling about them. However, recently, following the successes of TSOTSI, JERUSALEMA and WHITE WEDDING, this is beginning to change. There is a new group of young filmmakers – many of us who have honed our skills on the streets of violence-wracked townships and low-budget drama sets who are now beginning to tell stories in a more direct and authentic way that allows universal truths about courage, and jealousy, love and betrayal to emerge more convincingly.

Sospeso tra CITY OF GOD e BLUE CRUSH, OTELO BURNING è un emozionante romanzo di formazione che ha come protagonisti due ragazzi che imparano a fare il surf. Ambientato nei giorni della scarcerazione di Nelson Mandela, è un film sulle grandi speranze di cambiamento al tempo della fine dell’Apartheid, il tutto visto attraverso gli occhi di un ragazzo. L’idea alla base di OTELO BURNING è nata e cresciuta nel piccolo villaggio di Lamontville, sulla costa orientale del Sudafrica. È un film di grande dinamismo visivo e molto potente a livello emotivo, sulla storia di due amici che scoprono il surf come unica strada per fuggire dal loro villaggio e da una vita di miserie. Nel momento in cui sembrano a un passo dal riuscirci, i due si voltano le spalle. Da questo momento in poi, il film diventa una storia sull’avidità, il tradimento e la gelosia; la metafora di una nazione alle prese con la propria libertà.
Per molti anni, i registi sudafricani hanno sentito il bisogno di fare film in grado di avere successo presso il pubblico straniero. Questo ha smorzato l’integrità e la forza delle loro storie, privandole di ciò che avevano di unico e avvincente. Tuttavia, in seguito al successo di film come IL SUO NOME È TSOTSI, JERUSALEMA e WHITE WEDDING, qualcosa è cambiato.
