AVATAR

Category: Edition 2010

Synopsis

Jake Sully, a former Marine confined to a wheelchair, is recruited to travel to the human outpost on Pandora, where corporations are mining a rare mineral that is the key to solving Earth's energy crisis. Because the atmosphere of Pandora is toxic, they have created the Avatar Program, in which human "drivers" have their consciousness linked to an avatar, a remotely-controlled biological body that can survive in the lethal air. These avatars are genetically engineered hybrids of human DNA mixed with DNA from the natives of Pandora, the Na'vi. Reborn in his avatar form, Jake can walk again. He is given a mission to infiltrate the Na'vi, who have become a major obstacle to mining the precious ore. But a beautiful Na'vi female, Neytiri, saves Jake's life, and this changes everything. Jake is taken in by her clan and learns to become one of them. As Jake's relationship with Neytiri deepens, he learns to respect the Na'vi way and finally takes his place among them. Soon he will face the ultimate test as he leads them in an epic battle that will decide nothing less than the fate of an entire world.

James Cameron was born in 1954 in Kapuskasing, Ontario, Canada, and grew up near Niagara Falls. In 1971 he moved to Brea, California, where he studied physics at Fullerton Junior College. In 1978 he raised money to produce a 35mm short film. This film led to work on Roger Corman’s BATTLE BEYOND THE STARS (1980). Next he became second unit director on Corman’s subsequent movie, GALAXY OF TERROR (1981). In 1984 he shot THE TERMINATOR. Subsequently he directed ALIENS (1986), THE ABYSS (1989), TERMINATOR 2: JUDGMENT DAY (1991), TRUE LIES (1994). He also produced two feature films directed by Kathryn Bigelow, POINT BREAK (1991) and STRANGE DAYS (1994), and SOLARIS (2003) directed by Steven Soderbergh. In 1997 Cameron directed TITANIC: the feature film earned 11 Oscars (including Cameron’s 3 Oscars for Best Picture, Best Direction and Best Editing), and currently holds both the domestic and worldwide box office records having grossed over $1.8 billion at the global box office. In 1999 he co-created the TV series DARK ANGEL. He also set to work on a digital 3D camera system and proceeded to make underwater documentaries. Afterwards he realized two 3D Imax films, GHOSTS OF THE ABYSS (2003) and ALIENS OF THE DEEP (2005). He developed with Vince Pace the Fusion Camera System, which is the world's leading stereoscopic camera system.
