Synopsis
FOR A FEW DOLLARS MORE is one of Sergio Leone’s masterpieces with Clint Eastwood, Lee Van Cleef and Gian Maria Volontè. The film – in the version restored in High Definition by SKY Cinema and accomplished by the Cineteca di Bologna (Laboratorio L’immagine Ritrovata) – will be presented to the young cinéphiles of the Giffoni Film Festival. In the past few years SKY Cinema has been involved in the protection and restoration of the cinema from the past, above all Italian movies such as THE TRAFFIC POLICEMAN by di Luigi Zampa, THE EASY LIFE by Dino Risi, OSSESSIONE by Luchino Visconti.
The restoration of FOR A FEW DOLLARS MORE has been obtained from the original negatives of the film, using photochemical and digital technology. During the years the print had become a strange Magenta colour. Thanks to the restoration, the original colour has been restored and we have discovered that actors were illuminated in different ways: the divo Lee Van Cleef, and all his close-ups were homogeneously illuminated. On the contrary the frames with close-ups concerning Eastwood and Volontè are not always technically perfect. An important element was the restoration of the original 2:35 format. The audience will finally see every inch of the frame. Leone usually used all the inches that the panoramic format offered him. An example: after the first meeting between Clint Eastwood and Lee Van Cleef, there is a backwards tracking shot, that ends exactly on the legs of Eastwood that are evenly positioned in a geometric perfection, on the two borders of the screen. With the standards of some years ago it was impossible to catch the perfect construction of this frame.
Maimed, young and courageous gunman, plus Colonel Mortimer, go after Indio, the chief of a band on which there is a reward of 20.000 dollars. In El Paso, Texas, after an initial mistrust, the two make a deal: they will work together. Maimed enters the band while Colonel remains out of it. But something goes wrong: they are discovered and have to face Indio and his men. At this point the two get the chance to exploit the greed of chief. The man frees them, hoping they will kill many members of the band. In doing so chief would have the entire spoil of the El Paso robbery at his disposal. The two gunmen will face their enemies.
