QUINCEAÑERA

Category: Edition 2006

Synopsis

Magdalena is the daughter of a Mexican-American catholic family and lives in Echo Park, Los Angeles. With her fifteenth-birthday approaching, all she can think about is her boyfriend and the dress for her Quinceañera, the celebration that marks the entrance in adulthood for Mexican girls. But a few months before the celebration, Magdalena falls pregnant. When her religious father finds out, she is forced out of her home and moves in with great-great uncle Tomas. Already living with him is Carlos, Magdalena’s gay cousin, who was thrown out by his parents too. Together they form a family of outsiders that must stand up to social stigmas and encroaching urban gentrification that threatens their neighbourhood.

Directors’ statement

“QUINCEAÑERA is a reinvention of the Kitchen Sink drama. Kitchen Sink realism originated in British cinema in the late fifties and early sixties. These films encapsulated a kind of poetic realism that we wished to emulate in QUINCEAÑERA. We wanted a film that celebrated the everyday; that was about small things that gradually grew large; a film that had politics that were oblique, humour that was unexpected, emotions that gained power though restraint; a film that transcended the ordinary”.
