PINGPONG

Category: Edition 2006

Synopsis

After his father’s suicide, Paul, 16 years old, turns up uninvited to his aunt’s house. Marked by his dramatic experience, the boy is searching for an ideal world. He intrudes upon the seemingly ideal family composed by a mother, a father, a son and a dog. They live in a house with a garden, a pingpong table and a dilapidated swimming pool. But under the surface there are many tensions, above all between the son and the mother who expects too much from the boy’s piano lessons. After rejecting Paul at first, Aunt Anna gradually gets him on her side. Paul is attracted to her. Only after it is too late does he realize that he has been drawn under her control, and is now at her mercy. Paul’s pain drives him into an act of desperation and the boy changes the life of his aunt’s family forever.

Director’s statement

“The sun is shining. A woman is talking to her dog. Her son is practising the piano. Time has stopped. In the garden, there’s a dilapidated swimming pool. That is how it all started. Very poetic, no scrolls. An idyll, but something is wrong. I wanted to take a closer look at it. I wanted to study this microcosm and anatomise it. That was the birth of my first long feature film PINGPONG”.
