VALIANT

Category: Edition 2005

Synopsis

In World War II, pigeons played a crucial role for the Allied forces by delivering key dispatches. Three members of the Royal Homing Pigeon Service (RHPS) are en route to deliver messages. At the headquarters in London, word comes that none of the homing pigeons have made it back alive. Because of the losses from German falcons, new birds are needed. Little Valiant wants to be a hero. So he flies into London where he rescues the pigeon Bugsy from trouble. In return, Bugsy helps Valiant enter in the RHPS. They become part of a group of misfit recruits, who begin a tough training. Meanwhile Valiant falls in love with a nursing dove, Victoria. After a few weeks, the recruits are sent on mission to France where they will need to meet up with members of the Resistance and obtain a message that they must deliver back to England. Will they be able to face the dark forces of war?

Director’s statement

2One of my main concerns was establishing a look for the film. It is a comedy adventure but I thought it important to have some sort of homage to reality. At no point did we approach this like a cartoon. Valiant was always this mix of Charlie Chaplin and Norman Wisdom, although physically his character is really Errol Flynn, that’s who Valiant wishes he could be. In reality, to the members of his village, he’s just a chump, so he’s very Chaplinesque”.
