VIPER IN THE FIST

Category: Edition 2005

Synopsis

1920. Jean Rezeau and his elder brother are living happily at “La Belle Angerie”, the family estate in Brittany. Their grandmother’s death bring their parents back from Indochina and spells the end of their childhood... Their mother, Paule, a worthy descendant of fairy tale witches, takes over control of “La Belle Angerie”. Her husband doesn’t protest much. He is more interested in collecting insects than bringing up his children. The boys endure endless bullying, punishments and petty privations "for their own good". Finally Jean chooses to rebel. He rallies his brothers against this mother, who does not know how to love them and fills the household with an atmosphere of comical but vicious civil war. Jean stands firm to the end. Hate makes him grow, as love does for others.

Born in Paris in 1933 he worked on documentaries and as assistant director for Claude Chabrol. In 1960 he directed his first feature film, THE LOVE GAME (LES JEUX DE L’AMOUR). Among his over than 30 feature films, many revolve around love: he is in fact one of the most interesting directors of sentimental French comedies. Among his feature films we remember THE JOKER (LE FARCEUR, 1960), FIVE DAY LOVER (L’AMANT DE CINQ JOURS, 1961), SWORDS OF BLOOD (CARTOUCHE, 1962), KING OF HEARTS (LE ROI DE COEUR, 1966), GIVE HER THE MOON (LES CAPRICES DE MARIE, 1970), TOUCH AND GO (LA POUDRE D’ESCAMPETTE, 1971), DEAR LOUISE (CHÈRE LOUISE, 1972), INCORRIGIBLE (L’INCORRIGIBLE, 1975), DEAR INSPECTOR (TENDRE POULET, 1977), THE AFRICAN (L’AFRICAIN, 1983), 1001 NIGHTS (LES 1001 NUITS, 1990), ON GUARD (LE BOSSU, 1997). He directed Jean-Paul Belmondo in the exotic trilogy THAT MAN FROM RIO (L’HOMME DE RIO, 1964), UP TO HIS EARS (LES TRIBULATIONS D’UN CHINOIS EN CHINE, 1965), THE MAN FROM ACAPULCO (LE MAGNIFIQUE, 1974). He died in 2004.
