YOUNG KEES

Category: Edition 2004

Synopsis

Amsterdam, 1895. Young Kees is an imaginative and daydreaming boy. His father has a little shoe-shop and is seriously ill of tuberculosis, so the boy escapes his everyday problems by disappearing into his own imagination. We see him save his beloved by throwing himself in front of an approaching coach-and-four; defeat his fencing teacher; play virtuoso violin and mix with the rich and famous and does what is needed to save his father’s shoe shop from bankruptcy. In addition, he is driven by childish obsessive thoughts: he only allows himself to walk on certain paving stones; makes a bet with himself that he can carry a package on his head until he gets home; and is constantly afraid that everyone is watching him. And of course to get around, he often adopts a comic walk he calls “the swimming pool swagger”; a way of walking invented by boys to get into the swimming pool faster. Soon Kees has to grow up. His father dies and he feels he has to help his desperate mother and at the same time he has to try to save his dreams.

Director’s statement

“YOUNG KEES is a film about the power of imagination. It is based on a famous Dutch novel. Not primarily written for children but more for adults. The film will serve both children and adult audiences. I shot the film in a classic way. We filmed at authentic locations in Amsterdam and where historic buildings were missing we reconstructed the old situation at the computer. The children who perform the main parts are all experienced. They played in other Dutch feature films. It was a great pleasure to shoot this historical film. The time travel is fascinating both for the director and for the audience. By telling the story through the eyes of a 12 year old one relives his own youth with all its joys and sadness. YOUNG KEES is not an easy film, the themes of love and death are shown as they are. The pacing and storytelling are special”.
