The half-cast Fiela, and her affectionate family, take in Benjamin, a white child abandoned by his mother. When the child grows older a magistrate discovers the illegal adoption and puts Benjamin in the care of Barta, a woman who maintains he is her long-lost child, and her husband Elias. The boy, whose name is now Lukas, is mistreated by the violent Elias, and Fiela struggles in vain to get the boy back.
