Gerard Michael MacCarthy was born in Dublin, Ireland. He has lived in Russia since 1989 working as a writer, director, and film consultant.
Gerard wrote and directed the Russian language feature-film 'Micha' (Lestnitsa Sveta) shot at Lenfilm Studios in St. Petersburg which was commercially released in much of Europe, and extensively screened at International Festivals such as London, Madrid, and Rio de Janeiro.
Gerard worked as a consultant to establish the first independent television and film production company in Russia (Russian Video). His subsequent co-production and line production credits include 'Prodigal Son', a feature length drama-documentary for the BBC about composer Sergei Prokofiev, with live performances at St. Petersburg's Mariinsky Theatre conducted by Valeriy Gergiev; 'Nine Days in Leningrad' for Windmill Lane Pictures; and a Russian remake of Francois Truffaut's 'A Bout de Souffle' entitled 'Nicotine'.
Together with US based writer/producer, Gabrielle Kelly, Gerard established the 'International Film Workshop' in Moscow, initiating master-classes by Western film experts in areas such as film direction, acting for camera, film production, voice training and creative collaboration.
With Infiniti Film & Media (Russia), as writer/director Gerard is in pre-production on an adaptation of his own short-story 'Miguel and the Dancer', and is developing 'Turnaround - A Day in the Life of Vera Vasilievna'.
Gerard is currently Director of the Irish Film Festival in Moscow, and Director of Strategy and Concept for the Russian Arts and Culture magazine 'DEI'.
