A talented, discreet and sensitive director, he directed a dozen important films in forty years of career, from 1949 to 1989, winning the Golden Globe for Best Foreign Film in 1958 and in 1989 the audience award at the Cannes Film Festival. Since the mid-sixties he has turned his interests to television with a series of very prestigious films such as the French version of the Inquisests by Commissioner Maigret. Very appreciated, he often participates in the screenplay of his films. He was the brother of the actor Jean-Pierre Aumont, with whom he shot his first film, Hans le marin, in 1949, with the latter's wife, María Montez. He had five children, Mara, Patty, Venita, Jean and Aruna, and everyone except Venita followed his footsteps to the movies.
