Scharfenberg studied German philology, theater studies and philosophy in Jena and Berlin from 1950 to 1954. Until 1955 he worked in the field of dramaturgy at the DEFA and then completed his service with the NVA, which he graduated in 1957. From 1957 to 1970 Scharfenberg worked as a feature film dramaturge at DEFA. In addition, he wrote from the late 1960s, various film scripts and was active as an author for recordings. By the mid-1980s Scharfenberg published about 20 fairy tale records, including The Clever Farmer's Daughter (1973) and The Emperor's New Clothes (1986).
In 1981 Scharfenberg directed his first film: Der Märchenfilm The Mirror of the Great Magus followed in 1984 with The Reversed Queen his second and final directorial work, also a fairytale film.
