THE MACHINE

Category: Edition 1977

Synopsis
As this animated, no-dialogue film begins, a grid of diagonals forms. Seated on one of the lines, a nervous little man doodles aimlessly with his cane. Suddenly a beautiful angel kisses him on the head. Inspired, he doodles a design for a machine. When unclothed men appear, the doodler has his machine make clothing for them. After a second kiss from a no longer beautiful angel, the inventor sees a competitor with a small machine. The inventor now begins to use his machine more to destroy than create. As population increases, he redesigns the machine to produce all they need and want - and, eventually, war material. Finally, the machine draws its own designs and encloses the inventor in a box inside itself. But then the grid closes in on the machine, and a hook descends and pulls the caged machine into the sky.
