Films in competition, 21 July

 For elements +6 jurors it's the turn of The Pasta Detectives by Neele Leana Vollmar (Germany, 2014), at 15:00 in Sala Alberto Sordi. Rico, 10 years old, is a "lowly gifted" child. When something is asking too much of him, he gets mixed up and loses his bearing: that’s why he prefers to stay home. One day, Rico meets Oskar, an 8-year-old child who happens to be “highly gifted”, and feeling safe in his company he begins to explore the word outside. But when an infamous kidnapper snatches his friend away, Rico has to go out into the great, wide world of Berlin on his own so as to get him back.

Elements +10 presents The Legend of Longwood by Lisa Mulcahy (Ireland/The Netherlands/Germany, 2014), at 09:30 in Sala Alberto Sordi. Mickey Miller, a 12-year-old girl from New York whose great love is horses, starts a new life in Longwood Irish village, together with her mother and little brother. Mickey’s arrival in Longwood coincides with the return of the Black Knight, a legendary ruler whose appearances always mean that something evil is going to happen to the villagers. Realizing that she is somehow linked to that mysterious story, Mickey sets out to redeem the Knight but first she must save the lives of seven horses and thwart the evil plans of a greedy, ambitious woman.

Generator +13 goes on with Boys by Mischa Kamp (The Netherlands, 2014), scheduled at 14:30 in Sala Truffaut. During the summer training with his athletics team, Sieger meets charming Marc, a new member of the team. The two form a friendship that soon turns into secret attraction. Meanwhile, Sieger tries to bring together his father and brother, who often clash since the two brothers' mother died. But Sieger’s mind is elsewhere, as he finds it increasingly difficult to deny his feelings for Marc.

Han Gong-ju by Sujin Lee (South Corea, 2013) is dedicated to Generator +16 jurors. At 10.00am, in Sala Truffaut, it will be showed the story of Han Gong-ju, seventeen years girl forced to move to a new city and to change school, after having been involved in a tragic and dark episode. Her previous teacher gives her a place where she can stay. At school, Han Gong-ju's new friend discovers her singing skills and secretely creates a website dedicated to her. But when Han Gong-ju's talent is revealed by a video, the girl must face her tormenting past.

For Generator +18, at 10.00 am in Sala Lumiére, is on schedule Four Corners directed by Ian Gabriel (South Africa, 2014). Cape Town. Among street gangs, drug trade and criminals, four characters’ pathes are crossed: the ex-convict Farakhan, who is looking for the son he has never met; Ricardo, 13, who is grown up without father and torn up between athletic career and street gangs; the policeman Tito, resolute in finding a serial-killer that murders teenagers; the doctor Leila, just come back from London for her father’s funeral.

First film in competition for GEx Doc section: #ChicagoGirl: The Social Network Takes on a Dictator, directed by Joe Piscatella (Syria, USA, 2013) on schedule at 3.10pm in Sala Lumiére. Ala’a, 19, uses social networks from his bedroom to coordinate revolution in Syria. After dictator Bashar al-Assad represses the protests and blacks out the media, Ala’a records some videos using smartphone and digital camera, uploads them to internet and sends them to international press agencies to show the world what is really happening in Syria. Bashar al-Assad bombs Homs and the videos become a cry for help addressed to international communities. Ala’s and her fight mates will have to choose the best way to fight the dictator: social networks or arms.

Out of competition for Elements +3 section, Hocus Pocus, Alfie Hatkins by Torill Kove (Norway, 2013), at 19:00 in Sala Alberto Sordi. When he’s not playing pirates with his friends, six-year-old Alfie Atkins dreams of having a dog of his own, a playful terrier just like the ones old magicians have. And since magic is all in the mind, Alfie is convinced that he can use it to make his dream come true. However it’s not as easy as he thinks, eventually everything turns out in the most unexpected way.
