Cinema to look at the world, cinema as an opportunity for students and teachers to reflect and explore, cinema as a helping tool to engage in a critical analysis of our times. From its very first day, Giffoni has been knocking on classrooms’ doors with many projects dedicated to education, growth and dialogue. The relationship between Giffoni and schools has always existed; just think that the latest editions of Movie Days, namely events focused on cinema for schools, involved more than 600,000 students and 30,000 teachers, who visited Giffoni during the school year.

Giffoni's commitment to schools is stronger than ever today: the third edition of School Experience, the traveling festival created by the Ente Autonomo Giffoni Experience as part of the “Cinema and Images for Schools” National Plan and promoted by the Italian Ministry of Culture and Ministry of Education, will kick off in November. The project is supervised by scientific director Antonia Grimaldi from the Giffoni team.

During its first edition - from October to December 2019 - the event involved more than 20,000 students and 1,500 teachers from four regions of Italy (Veneto, Calabria, Sardinia and Sicily). It didn't even stop during the pandemic, when a digital version was made to link 32 Giffoni hubs in Italy, with special emphasis on Campania (Eboli and Giffoni Valle Piana), Basilicata (Terranova di Pollino, Senise, Sant'Arcangelo) and Sicily (Palermo).

School Experience is now set to resume its tour of schools in five Italian regions: Campania (Giffoni Valle Piana), Calabria (Cittanova), Lazio (Ceccano), Basilicata (Terranova di Pollino and Montescaglioso) and Sardinia (Nuoro and Tonara). This idea was born to address the needs and expectations of young people - aged 3 to 20 - from all over the country, with a special focus on the suburbs, their identities and potential. The third edition of the festival is scheduled from November 2022 to April 2023. The project will be completed with a final event that will be held in the Multimedia Valley and the Cittadella del Cinema in Giffoni Valle Piana.

For all stages, the program includes a competition dedicated to feature films (Feature Experience) and short films (Short Experience) made by Italian and foreign professionals, as well as a competition reserved for works produced by schools or cultural associations grouped by age range: Your Experience +3 (national productions targeting students aged 3 to 10, submitted by preschools, primary schools or cultural associations), Your Experience +11 (short films targeting children aged 11 to 13, made by lower secondary schools, cultural associations or individual video-makers) and Your Experience +14 (works targeting students aged 14 to 20, submitted by upper secondary schools, cultural associations or individual video-makers). For each section the winners will be presented with the School Experience Festival Award. Films produced after January 1, 2020, can enter the competition. Application is free and has to be made online by Tuesday, November 10.
