Ferran Paredes Rubio to Generator +18: "This is how I choose the colours of the stories I tell"

The magic of photography at the cinema, the importance of light, the excitement for the transition from film to digital. About all this, Ferran Paredes Rubio, Spanish director of photography who lives and works for some time in Italy and signed the photography of many film and tv series, has talked. Among these, many works by director Edoardo De Angelis, in particular “Indivisibili” for which he earned a David di Donatello nomination. At #Giffoni2022 Ferran Parewdes has met the young members of the jury Generator +18 that are attending a series of workshops dedicated to cinema professions. “I started out as a photographer – he said – my interest has always been to tell stories through images”.

Cinema changes also thanks to the evolution of technologies: “The transition from film to digitalFerran Paredes explained – has been very interesting. Technology has given us the opportunity to express ourselves in previously unimaginable ways”. The relationship between director and director of photography and, moreover, with the actors. These are all crucial dynamics, able to encumber the success of a film: “I have great respect for those directors who maintain relations with the actors – he said – but I can’t do it. On the set no work is as beautiful as that of the director of photography”. There should be a sort of elective affinity between the director and the director of photography: “Collaboration between these two figures – he said – is fundamental. It is right to know each other. You have to learn how the director expresses himself to avoid misunderstandings, to succeed in interpreting what he really has in his mind”.
