The premiere of Brian and Charles at Giffoni2022, director Jim Archer: "Technology can never replace human relationships"

The #Giffoni2022 second-day premiere has featured Jim Archer, David Earl and Chris Hayward, who are respectively the director and the actors of Brian and Charles, a comedy distributed by Lucky Red and Universal Pictures International Italy that will be in theatres at the end of August. Who wouldn't want a custom-built best friend who perfectly meets their needs? This is what Brian must have thought, played by David Earl, a British comedian whom many have appreciated in the TV series After Life, whereas the character of the robot Charles' is played by Chris Hayward, with support from producer Rupert Majendie who provided the vocal distortion.

A comedy with an unmistakable British humour, this film stemmed from the 2017 short film of the same name and, before that, from the play written by the two lead actors who then co-wrote the film's plot and screenplay. "We started from a live comedy - said the director - but then we felt the need to add other characters and enrich this funny story."

In some ways the robot is a metaphor of the theme chosen for #Giffoni2022: the invisibles. "Brian needs to fill a void - continued Jim Archer - to overcome his own loneliness and this very desperation pushes him towards Charles, but technology cannot be an answer because it cannot replace human relations in any way, and it would be nice if younger people in particular understood this. This is why I like the format on which this Festival has been built: the presence of so many young people is fascinating and the way in which they share their experiences with one another is in some way what we would like to make people understand too."
