Andrea Crisanti at #Giffoni50Plus: “Get vaccinated, do it for your future”

He didn’t feel like making any predictions for the near future, but Andrea Crisanti, professor of microbiology at the University of Padua, prestigious academic and renowned figure in the ongoing pandemic, had one certainty: “If I think back to all the steps that have been taken since the beginning – he said – from February 2020 until today, it is clear that we had the opportunity to stop and nip the epidemic in the bud and we did not do it. We could have put in place more effective and timely measures, that's for sure”. This is what he said at Giffoni in front of the young people from the IMPACT! section, who were extremely interested and involved. “I want to thank you – Crisanti said as he entered the cinema – this meeting is very encouraging. I came back to Italy after living and working in England for 25 years. I believe Italy needs a thousand, more, ten thousand Claudio Gubitosi”.

Crisanti has often been criticised for his overly dire predictions, although he has often proved to be right: “I don't like to quote myself – he explained – and I never use the expression ‘I already said that’. I have always been realistic and talked on the basis of the analysis of the situation. The rest is manipulation perpetrated by those who cannot understand the figures and then trivialise them. Terrorism is done by all those who have allowed the infection to spread. Every time politicians have given in to biased interests by adopting demagogic stances, they have been guilty of spreading the virus”.

Today we rely on the so-called green pass. Is that enough?  “The green pass – explained Professor Crisanti is not a public health instrument, it is an instrument of social acceptability. It can also be a weapon of persuasion to get the vaccine. However, there is no study showing that the green pass can have an effect on the spread of the infection. Moreover, we are now seeing how even vaccinated people become infected, because of the variants. In my opinion, the fact that the introduction of the green pass is leading to an increase in vaccinations is sad because it means that people decide to get vaccinated in order to go to the restaurant and not because they consider it a moral obligation for themselves, for their family, for the community”.

What is important now is that young people get vaccinated. Giffoni is the right place to say this: “I hope – he concluded –  that young people decide to take the vaccine not to go out with their friends but out of a sense of civic duty. From the age of 12 onwards, it is up to their parents to decide, and I hope that they understand how important this is, because if it is true that herd immunity is a mirage, we won't even come close to it if we don't get our children vaccinated”.
