Sustainable and responsible tourism, the agreement between Unwto, the World Tourism Organization, and Giffoni Opportunity has been signed

To promote and support the development of sustainable tourism, to spread the culture of conscious tourism among the new generations, to create training and growth opportunities for new business projects involving young people, new professions, new knowledge, to address the issue of sustainability from a tourism point of view, through appropriate communication campaigns, to support innovation and creativity at the service of responsible tourism: these are some of the objectives set out in the Memorandum of Understanding for the Partnership that was signed today, between the UNWTO, the world of Tourism Organization, and Giffoni Opportunity. It was signed by the UNWTO Secretary General, Zurab Pololikashvili, and the director of Giffoni Opportunity, Claudio Gubitosi. The signing took place in streaming between Madrid, the headquarters of the UNWTO, and Giffoni Valle Piana.
The collaboration between Giffoni Opportunity and UNWTO, the United Nations specialized agency that deals with the coordination of world tourism policies, continues. During the August leg of #Giffoni50, Alessandra Priante, the Regional Commission for Europe director of the World Tourism Organization, participated in the activities of “Giffoni Impact”.
"It is a very important moment for us - underlines Claudio Gubitosi, director of Giffoni Opportunity - because with the signing of this agreement we determine the conditions for the definition of an increasingly solid partnership in terms of sustainability for tourism. We are obviously looking at young people, children, the kids who represent the tourists of tomorrow. Traveling means discovering the world and yourself. Traveling in a conscious, sustainable and responsible way means discovering the best version of yourself. It is clear that this is perfectly in line with our values and with the spirit that has allowed Giffoni to cross the fifty years milestone”.
The spirit of the Memorandum, its aims and perspectives were illustrated by the Secretary General of the UNWTO, Zurab Pololikashvili: "“Younger tourists are increasingly concerned with conscious travel, in exploring new cultures and in giving something back to the communities they visit. UNWTO is committed to restarting tourism and harnessing its power to drive the recovery of our societies. This new Memorandum of Understanding advances our key priorities, emphasising sustainability and responsibility, and it will help empower a new generation of tourism leaders with the training and knowledge they will need to make a real difference”.
“We have designated 2020 as the year of tourism and rural development – adds the Secretary General, Zurab Pololikashvili - 2021 will be the year of youth tourism. What better place, therefore, to kick off this project than Giffoni? Italy is a country with great tourist potential. I am sure that, with respect to our project, Italy and Giffoni will be able to reserve very interesting surprises for us”.
The Memorandum specifically indicates five areas of cooperation on which UNWTO and Giffoni will be able to initiate forms of collaboration,  by sharing their know how and initiatives to maximize the positive impact of tourism on sustainable development in countries of common interest and in compliance with Agenda 2030 and 17 Sustainable Development Goals.
"Among our objectives, for some time now - adds director Gubitosi - we have included the opportunity to promote what I like to define as an ecology of thought and communication, a life choice, something which starts from Giffoni and spreads throughout the world, crossing the knots and meshes of the infinite network created by the Giffoners. The collaboration with the World Tourism Organization is perfectly in line with this ambitious goal. Last but not least, we need to reflect on the moment we are going through at a global level. To sign this agreement on tourism today, in such a delicate and uncertain phase, makes Giffoni, once again, an instrument of hope for the future, one that we await with open arms».
