Isabella Aguilar at #Giffoni50 Masterclass Cult: “My dream? Bringing Italian horror back to life”

Her dream? Bringing horror back to life in Italy. This is what Isabella Aguilar said during the Cult Masterclass, one of the most interesting projects of Italian screenwriting during a very well attended and stimulating meeting, which was animated by the many questions of the young participants attending the event. “We are carrying out a wonderful project with Groenlandia, Matteo Rovere’s production company. Horror is a genre that can never end because fear never dies, but a good horror film - the screenwriter explained - must be a great allegory. It must be able to evoke an ancestral fear. Horror films that do not succeed in doing this are derivative works that are unable to understand what lies behind a monster”.

In addition to being screenwriter of The Place by Paolo Genovese and of the musical “Un’avventura” directed by Marco Danieli, Aguilar has also worked with Netflix: “I prefer TV series - she explained - because they last longer and therefore give more satisfaction to those writing them. I had a good time working with Netflix. People there have such expertise that you can talk about screenwriting seriously. Once you understand their working system, you don’t face any difficulties. On the contrary, I had maximum freedom of expression”.
