Nickelodeon celebrates 20 years of SpongeBob SquarePants with “Best Year Ever”, a tribute to one of the most iconic characters and TV shows ever created. SpongeBob was launched on July 17th, 1999 and in the last 20 years it ruled as the number-one animated series for kids. Through the years, SpongeBob established itself as a pop character and icon, beloved by all generations, creating an entire universe of characters, pop culture catch phrases and memes, theatrical remarks, consumer products, walking the international fashion-week runways, winning a Tony award with its Broadway musical and creating a world-wide fan base with over 51 million followers of its Facebook page!
In Italy on Nickelodeon, Viacom’s channel which always housed SpongeBob, the “Best Year Ever” of the yellow sponge officially started off with a big party on saturday June 15th in Mirabilandia during the Nickelodeon SlimeFest. It will continue saturday July 13th at 2 PM with the premiere on Nickelodeon, the brand for kids and families present in exclusive on Sky (channel 605), of “SpongeBob’s Big Birthday Blowout”, an unreleased special 45-minutes episode, an original mix of animation and live-action. Throughout the year, the channel’s show schedule will be rich of special moments up until the summer of 2020 when “The SpongeBob Movie”, the long-awaited film, produced by Paramount Pictures and Nickelodeon, will arrive.
To celebrate with all SpongeBob’s friends and fans, Nickelodeon decided to join the 49th edition of the Giffoni Film Festival where, on Saturday July 20th, there will be a special screening of “SpongeBob’s Big Birthday Blowout”.
It is SpongeBob’s birthday and for the first time we listen to SpongeBob, Patrick, Mr. Krabs, Sandy, Squidward and Plancton’s talent as they sing and play with their doubles. In the 1-hour special, Patrick and SpongeBob tour the surface world where they meet some familiar characters during the busiest time at The Trusty Slab restaurant. Meanwhile the inhabitants of Bikini Bottom prepare a surprise party for SpongeBob.
In its Italian version, the theme song of the special episode “SpongeBob’s Big Birthday Blowout” is performed by Matteo Markus Bok, a very young and talented artist. He sings, plays guitar and piano, dances, acts and speaks perfectly 4 languages: Italian, German, English and Spanish. In Giffoni everybody can sing the theme song together.
