The film, distributed by 20th Century Fox Italia, is set to open on August the 10th nationwide, but giffoners will have the amazing opportunity to see it almost a month earlier: On 16 July,at the 47th Giffoni Film Festival (14-22 July 2017) "Diary of a Wimpy Kid - The Long Haul" will premiere domestically. The latest installment based on one of the best-selling book series of all times.
“Diary of a Wimp - The Long Haul" is the ninth book of the series by Jeff Kinney and is the fourth that has been adapted for the big screen five years after “Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Dog Days", which was premiered at Giffoni in 2012.
Just as legions of fans can't wait for the latest book featuring Greg to be issued each new film is speaks to a new generation of kids and parents who can't wait to see their beloved books come to life yet again.
In the first episode of “Diary of a Wimpy Kid” we see the adventures of Greg Heffley, who is fresh out of elementary school and transitions to middle school where he has to learn the consequences and responsibility to survive the year. The second film, “Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Rodrick Rules” deals with Greg's relations with his older brother Rodrick. the third film, “Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Dog Days"), explores Greg's relationship with his father and with his best friend.
In the fourth episode “Diary of a Wimpy Kid - The Long Haul” Greg plans to get to a video game convention where he hopes to achieve the fame he feels he deserves for himself and get rid of his bad reputation: he wants to make a cool video and put it on line thanks to the support of YouTuber wizard Mac Digby. Greg writes to him and finds out he is at the video game convention. His mother Susan (Alicia Silverstone), wants her family to bond so she arranges a Heffley road trip, banning gadgets, to attend Meemaw's 90th birthday party. At the beginning Greg refuses to go on the trip but then realizes it might just help him get to the video game convention. Frank (Tom Everett Scott) is overwhelmed by his job and is not convinced the road trip is such a good idea. Rodrick (Charlie Wright), Greg's main bully and brother, is only focused on his band and on how to get his parents to spill out some money to repair his van. Despite nobody really wants to go, except for young Manny (Dylan and Wyatt Walters), Susan manages to talk them into getting their luggage ready and setting off for the trip. The Heffley's road trip ends up going hilariously off course.
“Everything the audiences loved about the first three films is amplified in this crazy adventure”, said one of the producers, Nina Jacobson. “It's a film where an incredible number of wacky things happen, adding up to the seagulls, a pig and Mr. Barbù. It's a huge fun comedy”.
In this latest episode Kinney is back as the executive producer and writer alongside director and writer David Bowers - who had already helmed the first three installments of the franchise - and producers Nina Jacobson and Brad Simpson.
While the memory of the cast that gave life to the first three films of the series is still strong “Diary of a Wimpy Kid”, those incredible kids have now grown up and go to college. The search for a new Greg Heffley began, and after auditioning so many young talented actors, also abroad twelve year old Jason Drucker was chosen. Besides Greg, the authors found new actors to play the roles of Susan, Frank, Rodrick, Rowley and Manny. therefore Jason Drucker was joined by Alicia Silverstone (“Clueless") and Tom Everett Scott (“Music Graffiti” - That Thing You Do) who play the parents. Charlie Wright plays Rodrick, Greg's irritating elder brother who keeps taunting him, while Owen Asztalos plays Rowley. Manny, the youngest actor is played by Dylan and Wyatt Walters, two of the 4 year old triplets. As this was their first film, Julie their mother didn't know what to expect and hoe they would have behaved or if they would have sat down or stayed put. The cute twins were incredibly professional and brought a lot of energy and fun on the set, especially when they didn't agree on whose turn it was to shoot.
Diary of a Wimpy Kid started off as an online series of comics and soon went on to become a huge success before Jeff Kinney published his first book in 2007. The book remained for almost three years in the bestseller charts for children of the New York Times and sold millions of copies worldwide, translated in 53 languages including Latin. The first copy was donated to the Pope. The film has already grossed 225 million dollars. The success is bound to get even bigger with the latest episode of the franchise.
