Giffoni Valle Piana is located in the Picentini a few miles from Salerno and Napoli and in the middle of an area of great traditions and history: the Campania Region where you can enjoy the fantastic landscape of the Amalfi coast and the isles of Capri and Ischia, and imbue yourself of the amazing heritage of Pompei and Paestum.
AMALFI COAST
The Amalfi Coast is one of the most enchanting coastlines in Europe, for the spectacular landscape and historic heritage of the place. The vegetable patches and the gardens, are all contained in terraces, where the products, like lemons, are cultivated from centuries. The nature of Amalfi coastline has made very difficult and interesting the construction of the main road (named Statale 163) that connects all the villages of the coast. This incredible road was built around 1840 and completed in 1852, and it wings around the mountains, on cliffs varying from 50ft to 400ft above the sea, offering each corner a breathtaking sea view.
When you come to Amalfi, the panorama is wonderful. White houses climbed up the rocks are opposite to the big Saint Andrew Church, located in the middle of the town. Every street hides a square, where in the past people used to sell their merchandise. Through one of this street we discover Piazza dei Dogi, still called Piazza dei Ferrari, because there were smiths’ shop. From here, other streets go everywhere; one of these takes us to the sea, where we find the entrance of the Antichi Arsenali.
Atrani
This little town is situated near Amalfi, is situated between the Civita Hill and Aureo Hill. It had the same historical destiny as the Amalfi Republic. The panorama of Atrani is very suggestive. All the houses built one over the other make it look like a Nativity Scenery.
Cetara
This little town is 15 km far from Amalfi. It is in the valley below the Falerio mountain. Historically, Cetara followed the same fate as the Amalfi Republic. Because it was a border town of the Amalfi Republic and the Dukedom of Salerno, it became a Saracin navy base. Cetara is known for its tinned anchovies and tuna fish production. They used a Roman traditional recipe called "GARUM", that has been modified in the course of time.
Furore
Furore was founded by the Romans and thanks to its geological conformation, this village was never invaded by the Saracens. It is situated inside the homonymous fjord and there are two villages, one on the sea, the other on the mountains. We can reach the fjord of Furore running the S.S. 163 from Amalfi to Positano; after having left the “Emerald Cave”, the road slides slowly to the sea; then a tunnel comes before this natural wonder.
Maiori
Only a brief stretch of coastline seperates Amalfi and Minori (the ancient 'Regina Minor'); however, even this small town played its part along with the others in the history of the Maritime Republic of Amalfi. It has been a popular tourist resort since Roman times, with the longest unbroken stretch of beach on the Amalfi coastline. In the mid-20th century, Roberto Rossellini filmed some of his most famous films here: “Paisà” (1946); "Il Miracolo" ("The Miracle"), the second episode of the movie L'Amore (Ways of Love, 1948); La macchina ammazzacattivi (Machine to Kill Bad People, 1952); and Viaggio in Italia (Journey to Italy, 1953). A film festival is held every November at which the Premio Internazionale Roberto Rossellini is awarded.
Minori
The origins of the name Minori come from its association in the past with the river that crosses it, Regghina, its ancient Latin name was Regghina Minor. This name coincides with the name of the neighboring village Maiori, then known as Rheggina Maior. Just inside Minori, coming from Amalfi, the remains of a first century roman villa are found; it is still possible to see the thermal baths, nimphaneum, the peristilio and viridarium.
Positano
One of the most gorgeous pearl of the Amalfi Coast, worldwide famous for its beauty. Positano is synonymous of summer fashion. Its boutiques made every summer thousands of dresses in cotton, silk and linen. The fantasy and the geniality of their creations, whose colours are very simple like the green emerald, the white and the yellow, always suggest the summer fashion.
Ravello
Ravello is situated about 5 km from Amalfi; up on the mountains, overlooking the coast from Maiori to Amalfi. The Villa Rufolo, from XII century, erected by the Rufolo's family and the Villa Cimbrone, are two sites not to be missed for their splendor and their internal decorations. Both these Villas have an amazingly beautiful garden that, if it is even possible, enhances the Villas even more. From Villa Cimbrone, you can admire one of the most divine panoramic view of Italy, along all the Amalfi Coast, and on some days, up to the Coast Cilentana.
Vietri sul Mare
The first town that we meet, coming from Salerno is Vietri sul Mare.
The town is built on a little promonty and on the seaside where we find an impressive Saracin tower. Vietri Sul Mare produced ceramics since XV century; its trade was especially with Sicily and Calabria. The decoration of Vietri ceramic has the typical colour of the coast.
SALERNO
Salerno (20 kms to Giffoni), south from Naples on the A3, on the Bay of Salerno, is a city of just over 150,000 inhabitants. It is the largest city on the Amalfi Coast, and one of the least explored by English-speaking travelers. That will change as more and more people "discover" the many historical, cultural, social, religious, culinary, architectural, and recreational delights the city has to offer.
Here are some of things that travelers will want to see in this robust city, which, though steeped in history, continues to keep up with the times.

The Church of San Giorgio
Via Del Duomo 19
Opening Times: 9:30 AM - 12:30PM weekdeays
Closed Weekends

San Giorgio is the most beautiful Baroque church in existence in Salerno and rich in frescoes of the finest quality. In the Chapel dedicated to the saints Tecla Archelaa and Susanna, in 1680, Francesco Solimente painted three murals illustrating these saints being led to their martyrdom. The vision of Suor Agata and the saints in meditation constitutes the first great work of the painter.
NAPOLI
In the shadow the Vesuvius tourism roots run deep: on the imprints of great greek columns refined aristocrats and Roman emperors built their sumptuous villas and oasis all along the shoreline of the Gulf. It is not a coincidence that at the begining of this third millennium the peculiar magic of this civilisation continues to generate new sources of amazement: the recovery of age old monuments and traditions – folklore, gastronomy, genuine cultivation – that were thought irreparably lost, events and shows worthy of the great international circuit, new fodder for artistic and scientific research.
Neaples’ aritistic treasures to visit are countless; the old city centre, world patrimony protected by Unesco; the buildings, the churches, the catacombs and the underground paths, the Archeological Museum; the places of Medieval and Renaissance power around the Castel Nuovo and Palazzo Reale; the unforgettable seafront, from Castel dell’Ovo to Posillipo. The Vomero hill area proposes museum colections among the most important in the world, in restored locations that have been set up in an exemplary way : Capodimonte’s Palazzo Reale and the Certosa of San Martino.
