BIOGRAPHY:
Walter Veltroni was born in 1955 in Rome. His father Vittorio was one of the first editors in chief of RAI news. In 1992 following into his father's steps he became the editor in chief of the daily l’Unità.
He was elected MP in 1987 and went off to become deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Cultural heritage, leader of Left Democrats, European MP, Mayor of Rome, Democratic Party leader and member of the Anti-Mafia Parliamentary Committee.
He has published many books Il Pci e la questione giovanile (Newton Compton, 1977); A dieci anni dal ‘68, intervista con Achille Occhetto (Editori Riuniti, 1978); Il Sogno degli anni Sessanta (Savelli,1981); Il calcio è una scienza da amare (Savelli 1982); Io e Berlusconi (e la Rai) (Feltrinelli, 1990); I programmi che hanno cambiato l’Italia (Feltrinelli, 1992). In 1981 he wrote Il Sogno spezzato/A broken dream, on the life of Robert Kennedy, while in 1994 he wrote a book in honour of an important Italian leftist Politician who influenced his thought, namely, La Sfida interrotta, about Enrico Berlinguer, both were published by Baldini &Castoldi.
He has always taken a stand for strong causes like Cancelling Third World Debt and been to many African Countries. He describes this experience in his book Forse Dio è malato, published in 2000 by Rizzoli. In 2003, he published Il disco del mondo about Jazz musician Luca Flores.
In 2004, he made his debut in writing Fiction with Senza Patricio, a collection of five short stories inspired by a journey through Argentina. In August 2006 he wrote La scoperta dell’alba, Rizzoli, which was number one in the charts for several weeks. Other works he has written, NOI. In April 2010 his monologue for the Theatre Quando cade l’acrobata, was published. The monologue is dedicated to the Heysel Tragedy and was performed at the Ravello theatre Festival. In 2012 L’isola e le rose, and in 2013 E se noi domani.
In April 2015 His latest film documentary I Bambini Sanno/Children Know opened in Italy. It is about 39 children aged 8 to 13 to whom Veltroni asks questions that range from Love, family, God, Homosexuality and recession. The interviews are preceeded by sequences from films on childhood like Baaria, Io non ho Paura, Gremlins and Les Quatre cent coups.
This is second film as a director and it follows Quando C'era Berlinguer, which was released in March 2014.
