Category: Edition 2022

Told over 24 hours and centered around a farmhouse, the film is a story about one night at the end of the 1800s that changes 14-year-old Lise’s life forever. Lise is the eldest of eight siblings. She is in love, she is the first in her family to go to school, and she is full of hope and confidence in life. But when her mother goes into labor, it quickly appears that something is wrong. As night falls and the birth intensifies, Lise must prepare herself – a day that began in childhood might end with her becoming the woman of the house.

Director’s Statement

“I first read Marie Bregendahl’s novel A Night of Death (1912) a few weeks after my son was born, and it has stuck with me ever since. Images kept reappearing in my mind; fragments of a woman’s face withered in labor pain, little girls who cannot say the words “thy will be done”, because what if God’s will is to take Mother…?
In adapting the book for screen, I chose to follow the eldest daughter, Lise, this 14-year-old girl who in one night loses her childhood, her future and faith in God. We leave her on the field where she disappears and becomes just another field hand, and by that we want to say that this is not just her story, it is the story of girls and women throughout history.”
