Synopsis

Life is not sweet for Sweetness O’Hara, 17 year-old. Her family lacks warmth, at school and on the street she is the target of aggressions. One day, when she is out riding her bike, a gang and its leader, Latonya, a notorious bruiser, beat her to the ground. Sweetness’ older sister Ola saves her. But Sweetness won’t be able to rely on Ola for much longer. At home Sweetness’ white father, Gordon, an aggressive drinker, and her black mother, Lorene, have a fight: Lorene and Ola leave home. From now on Sweetness must look after herself. With the help of local celebrity Roland she earns herself street credibility. Soon she attempts a head-on collision with Latonya and beats her rival. Sweetness becomes an increasingly loudmouthed bully. Only when her mother and sister come back, Sweetness finds out that she is now the author of the kind of aggression which used to make her own life a misery.

La vita non è dolce per Sweetness O’Hara, 17 anni. In famiglia le manca l’affetto, a scuola e in strada è bersaglio di violente aggressioni. Un giorno, mentre è in giro in bicicletta, la banda di Latonya, teppista della zona, la scaraventa a terra: Sweetness è salvata dalla sorella maggiore Ola, ma non potrà contare a lungo sul suo aiuto. Poco dopo, infatti, il padre Gordon, bianco e alcolizzato, litiga con la madre di colore, Lorene, che scappa di casa portando con sé Ola. Da quel momento Sweetness può contare solo su se stessa. Con il sostegno di Roland, una celebrità locale, si guadagna un po’ di rispetto in strada, fino ad affrontare Latonya. Sweetness batte la sua antagonista e inizia a diventare sempre più prepotente. Solo quando la madre e la sorella tornano a casa, Sweetness si rende conto di essere diventata autrice delle stesse aggressioni che le stavano rovinando la vita.
